Slow reading book, and I blame Chuck for the weird randomness running through my head now. Not that it’s bad mind you–just nothing I would have thought up on my own.
- Lover Awakened — J.R. Ward

- The Redemption of Deke Summers — Gayle Wilson
- Obsidian Butterfly — Laurell K. Hamilton

I think it’s fitting that I turned 25 during week twenty-five (edit: no–that was wrong. It’s really week twenty-nine). Also fitting? That I got to read my favorite book series in it’s entirety this week.
It certainly helps that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows was released the day after my birthday. And it’s a nice semi-tradition. HP7 was a birthday gift from my sister, while HP6–Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince–was released three days before my 23rd birthday, and was a gift from my brother.
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — J.K. Rowling
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets — J.K. Rowling
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban — J.K. Rowling
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire — J.K. Rowling
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix — J.K. Rowling
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince — J.K. Rowling
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows — J.K. Rowling
- Lover Eternal — J.R. Ward
I needed the paranormal romance to clear my palette after a gorging of Potter. And part of me wants to gorge all over again.

I finished quite a few more books than I expected, but then again, once I get on a roll, I’m on a roll. Plenty of romance this week to counteract the Harry Potter indulgence that’s coming. Seven HP books in one week is a dream come true.
- A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson
- Marked - P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast
- Write Great Fiction: Characters, Emotion & Viewpoint - Nancy Kress
- The Handmaiden’s Necklace - Kat Martin
- Sweet Sensations - Adrienne Basso
- Where There’s a Will - Day Leclaire
- Girls Night - Stef Ann Holm
I did read the HP “textbooks” on Saturday night before I fell asleep, but I feel that if I can read both of them right before bed–on the same night–they don’t really count for the book count.
So, I didn’t actually finish a book this week. But for the first time, I’m reading about four books at the same time, which is usually something I avoid.
I’m reading a book on writing, a non-fiction book about science, still struggling through Mason & Dixon (but oh, what a sweet moment to have Pynchon’s research validated with the science book. I love when my books interrelate), and am almost three quarters of the way through Bulfinch’s Mythology.
I should finish at least one of these books by this week. And then I think it’ll be a re-reading of the Harry Potter series in preparation for book seven.
Today, ME has the pleasure of an insanely boring day of summer orientation up at Chico State.
Even more boring for her than me, because she’s actually done the whole summer orientation thing before at Sacramento State, and as it turns out–as we compared notes–Chico’s is intensely more boring.
The only good reason to go, if you’re a transfer student, is because at the end of the day you get to sign up for classes;Â in the normal scheme of things, you wouldn’t be allowed to register until the end of July.
ME was gone all last week to Ghost Mountain, and I saw her briefly on Saturday night before she left for this weeks excursion–orientation, and then a mini-road trip with her mom. The whole purpose of us hanging out was so that she could borrow my Course Catalog and save her self some cash. Also, so she could decide on her classes before she left.
After a brief discussion, it appears that we’ll only have one class together, if we’re lucky. She’s taken a few more upper level classes than I have, seeing as she actually attended Sac State while we were both at Sac City, and she likes an entirely different genre of fiction.
How we’re still friends when she prefers American Literature to British Literature is beyond me.
Luckily, even though we’ll probably only end up taking a few of the same classes for the English requirement, we’re both doing the certificate program, and neither of us have taken any of those courses.
So she’s going to attempt to get into the literary editing course I’m already signed up for, which is brilliant, really. It’s an evening course, and if we take it together, neither of us will have to walk home alone.
– “Lazy Eye,” Carnavas: Silversun Pickups
Only a few books this week. Turns out with all this free time for summer, my brain can’t handle too many words on pages. Doesn’t help that I’m still attempting Mason & Dixon at work (and got a weird cross reference with a non-fiction book I’m reading to characters within Mason & Dixon), and I’ve got a book on Access Databases to get through.
- Soul Song - Marjorie Liu
- Labyrinth - Kate Mosse
- The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Writing Erotic Romance - Alison M. Kent
As a writer’s reference, the Complete Idiot’s Guide was apparently just that… A book on erotic romance that referred to cunt as the “c” word, and didn’t once say fuck. No cursing at all. My guide to characters is dirtier than that. Also, no real prompts, or tips on how to write a better sex scene. So, not helpful at all, really, except to expound what other writing guides talk about, and how they relate to the genre.
