Mixtape Download #2: Intro to SummerThank god Josh reminded me that today was Monday. Not that I didn’t remember it was Monday, but since I wasn’t paying attention to the calendar, that it was the first Monday of the month. Which means what? Oh, that’s right. Mixtape Monday.

This month’s theme is “Intro to Summer” or begining of summer, how ever you want to say it. It was hard to pick songs for this one because for me, summer is about falling in love and breaking up. In whichever order you choose to do them in. But, eventually, we’ll get around to those themes for mixtapes, so I didn’t want to use all my good material here.

As I flipped through my iTunes playlist, trying to find exactly the right song, I realized that there are a bunch of albums I always wanted but never got. So a side-effect of putting this list together is finding the music I forgot about.

I tried to keep the mix fast-paced. Which took me a lot longer, because I’d add a song to the list, and then five minutes later decide it wasn’t fast enough. I wanted to include Dashboard Confessional, but I kicked them for Fall Out Boy, because FOB knows how to get a party started. And the Beach Boys scream summer. I could have done the entire mixtape with them, but I chose the two songs of theirs I loved the most growing up. California Girls because I am one, and Kokomo because my dad used to play that with his band when I was little.
If you don’t like my mix, make your own! This is my intro to summer. Let me see what yours is.

Really? This is all I read this week? It’s sorta sad. But I am reading two writing references at the same time. The problem now is that my reading pile has shrunk mightily since February, and the majority of the books left are reference books. Not surprising. And the gigantic stack of romances ME gave me, which is enough to tide me over until I can actually go out and buy more books. At the end of summer.

  1. Body Heat – Carly Phillips
  2. High Plains Bride – Jenna Kernan
  3. Digging Up Trouble – Jo Ann Ferguson

None of these were horrible, none of them were terribly good either. No wonder they’re on ME’s donation pile.

Erin got the meme from Cas, and then demanded in IRC that I make her ask me questions. Who am I to say no to Erin? So she emailed me questions last night, and I answered them this morning. If you want me to ask you questions, leave me a comment. Who doesn’t like personalized meme questions? (Don’t answer that!)

1. Who was your first kiss, how old were you, and how did it happen? We want details.

My very first kiss happened on the last day of school, my sophomore year of high school. I was in the park behind the school, sitting with my best friend Mark on the playground equipment (imagine, if you will, those modern-ish playgrounds where there’s a bridge, and various platforms that stair-step to the slide, the platforms being large squares), and we were talking about something completely random. Somehow the topic came up about my never being kissed–which I was very self conscious about.

I said something to the effect that I was “waiting for my sleeping beauty moment” because I’m a nervous wreck about those moments (still am). I wasn’t looking at him at all, because I didn’t want him to tell me how stupid that was. Instead, he leaned over and kissed me–missing my mouth the first time, landing spot on the second time. It was alright, but very wet, and I got the impression that a dog had licked me.

Later on, I would learn that impression was right. I had always had a crush on Mark, and with the way he treated me afterwards, I thought we’d start dating. But no, he spent the summer lying to me about something that happened between our friends, and I haven’t talked to him since. And I avoided going to a party last month just to not have to deal with old high school issues with him.

2. Let’s imagine that you bringing a boyfriend home to meet your family for the first time and Mom tells him one of your excruciatingly embarrassing childhood stories. Now tell us.

Lucky for me, my mom isn’t the type to embarrass me by telling stories. She grew up the youngest of three siblings, and is very sensitive to that sort of thing.

But embarrassing stories? I got grounded in the third grade for mooning a guy on the playground after school, my sister caught me skinny dipping by myself when I was ll or 12, my brother called me Shamu when I was in high school, and I was grounded for most of the seventh grade for failing English. That’s right, the subject I like most I failed for most of the year when I was 12.

3. Who is your biggest Internet crush, either past or current? (For the sake of the question, let’s eliminate me from the options, as it wouldn’t be fair for the runners-up.)

But.. but.. Erin! No actually, my current internet crush is on a man who doesn’t even know I exist! (I know, how is that possible, right?) I’m seriously in-like with Scott McNulty. He’s the lead blogger at the Unofficial Apple Weblog, has a personal blog at Blankbaby, and is co-host for Forkyou.tv. And no I haven’t been stalking him! I haven’t left a single comment on any of his sites (except for maybe Fork You! or viddler, because I think I commented on a video once), but I secretly really like him. I can’t explain it, but I think a lot of it is because he’s tall, he’s built like a football player, he’s funny, and he likes books. Seriously? That’s all I need in a web crush. Oh, and he’s single. Yum.

4. An incredibly wealthy stranger bankrolls a two week vacation for you and your “plus one.” You are encouraged to spend as much or as little as you choose, but may only spend it on those two weeks and may only go to one location. Where are you going? (No cheating!)

Omg, Erin, only one location? Than it’s a complete toss up between London and Costa Rica, but if someone with money is bankrolling the whole trip, I’d probably pick London, because I think I could scrounge up the cash for Costa Rica. Of course,it’d be first-class all the way, we’d go to all the museums, see Buckingham Palace, and do up Harrod’s right. Given the fact that I love all things English, I might have a problem getting on the plane back home.

5. What are five goals that you have for your life?

If you had asked me right out of high school, it’d be only one goal, and that was to get my AA. I suppose I better get some new ones, pronto, huh?

  1. I want to publish a novel–and if possible, many novels. And a Harlequin Romance. Because Harlequin knows romance.
  2. To be a acquiring editor for a large publishing company, fiction preferably. I’d love to decide what you’ll see on the shelves.
  3. Live in abroad. Either Denmark, where I have family, or England, because I love the British. And I want to do it sooner rather than later.
  4. To be famous in some way. Even if it’s just as a A-List blogger, it’s more than enough for me.
  5. Finish up my BA, and seriously consider getting my Masters. I haven’t decided yet, but with the withdrawals this last week, somehow I can’t comprehend not being in school.

You’ll note that nowhere on that list are the goals getting married and having kids. That’s not to say I don’t want them; it’s more that those happen when they happen, and if it doesn’t, I won’t be unhappy, because it’s my choice.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, women who have marriage and children as a major goal in their life often forget about themselves once the children come. And let me tell you, I’m a selfish person, when it comes to my life. I wouldn’t sacrifice my goals for my children, and I’m sad that my mom did it for us. She could have been so much more, enjoyed her work so much more, if she hadn’t always put herself last in our family. Like she still does.
