In my experience they'd much rather have you checking out books that waiting because of too big a fine. I've often had fines completely forgiven, once I had all the books back, just because making money on fines is not what the library really wants to do.... the fines are just a deterrent to keep folks from keeping stuff too long. Worth a shot to give them a call and see what they can do. Dammit, I said Write, Woman!!!
